Sonnet of Stars

By Abbey Howard

Oh, the stark, chilling beauty of the nights!

Rapt with wonder, gazing up at space,

This darkened expanse suddenly ignites

The notion that I’ll leave too small a trace.

Above, the winking of a thousand stars

Dazzles me, dizzies me, overwhelms me.

With these thoughts I fill depthless reservoirs

And still, dread is all I can foresee –

Dread of the vastness, dread of the unknown

The stars a bright light in the boundless dark

Unable to cut through fear overgrown.

Though from this ship I try to disembark,

I can’t help but be struck by the thought:

As the sun rises, this was all for naught.
